away moving a few regulars up the South West series points table.

Darcey Wooley still holds out with a 20 point advantage over his nearest rivals in Stuart Robinson and Dale Cummings both on 140 points followed closely by Glen Schouller on 137 points then Spek on 136.

So in the last 2 events theoretically Darcy Woolley could be toppled from the top, it would take some bad luck on Darcey's part such as a dnf but stranger things have happened.

I am sure David Herrewyn will be pleased to see himself in the top type='text'>Max McKenzie Memorial

2011 Max McKenzie Memorial
On July 23rd 2011 the Max McKenzie Memorial was hosted by the Mount Gambier Cycling and Triathlon club.
On a cold and overcast day with light winds 45 riders faced the starter. Two limit riders Rod Lawson and Shannon Malseed getting a 28.5 minute start on scratch.
The handicapper divided the field into eight bunches, Scratch, 3 minutes, 5.5 minutes, 7.5 minutes, 9 minutes, 13 minutes, 15.5 minutes and 28.5 minutes.
Shannon Malseed from Portland had a strong ride leaving Rod Lawson and trying to solo to the finish line for a win. At 10km from the finish this looked to be a possibility however the 7.5 minute bunch had been riding strongly, strongly enough to pick up the next three bunches, then pick up Shannon Malseed about 4km from the finish.
With riders like Mark Wight, Mel & Stu McKinley, Clint Lancaster, Steven Mutch & Dale Cummins forcing the pace scratch was not able to bridge the gap.
Daryl Patzel from Mt Gambier went quite early in a hotly contested sprint but was able to hold on for what seemed an eternity to win the Race closely followed by Andrew Lindsay from Portland the Bruce McLaughlin from Mount Gambier came in for a well earn’t 3rd place.
Not long after the Scratch bunch crossed the line, Darcy Woolley able to just hold out Luke Aggett by a ¼ of a wheel for fastest time. Darcy’s ride time for the 58 km race 1.26.50
Results,
1 D Patzel MTG, 2 A Lindsay PTL, 3 B McLaughlin MTG, 4 Mark Hermon HAM, 5 D Bryant MTG, 6 Dale Cummins PTL , 7 Chris Kennett HAM, 8 Steven Mutch MTG, 9 Clint Lancaster PTL, 10 Mel McKinley MTG (First female)
Time, D Woolley PTF.
Darcy Woolley still holds the SWS leaders Jersey, mat lane is in second place and the Evergreen Stuart Robinson is as usual closing the gap and sitting now in third position with a few more events to go.

darcey woolley ptf 140
matt lane wrn 127
stuart robinson ham 120
glenn schouller cpd 117
dale cumming ptl 114
james okeefe wrn 111
mark hermon ham 111
laurie peake mtg 110
luke aggett ptf 95
mark schouller cpd 90
kate winnen ptf 89
dylan lindsey ptl 82
tim koopman mtg 81
david herrewyn mtg 75
ashliegh herrewyn mtg 72
darryl patzel mtg 72
niel duncan ptf 71
Geoff Verhoef ptf 71
stacey hocking wrn 69
blake hocking wrn 66
jarred gilbertson mtg 65
arno vanderchan cpd 64
mark winnen ptf 63
wayne hately cpd 63
simon walsh ptf 62
laurie paltridge ptf 62
jeff mclean ptf 60
michael krybolder cpd 60
timshel knoll miller ptf 59
lachlin nolte ptl 56
jade frankel wrn 55
andrew lindsay ptl 54
melissa mckinlay mtg 53
stephen mutch mtg 53
danny bourke wrn 52
john cranwell mtg 51
mark hyland wrn 50
phil otoole ptf 50
peter radcliffe ptl 50
frank mcarthy wrn 50
david tozer ptf 50
paul bast ham 50
daniel herrewyn mtg 50
stuart mckinlay mtg 50
peter murphy wrn 49

Next South West Series Event

Mount Gambier will be the host of the Next Banks Thargo South West Series event.

There has been over 170 different riders compete in the series so far this year.
After the last event we finally have 10 riders at the top all with different points.

Darcey Wooley has a strong hold on the top place, Stuart Robinson has jumped to on the board after his second place at Beeac.

There is still time for a challenge to the leader, and there are still enough points available in the series for quite a few to catch Darcey. type='text'>George Gill Casterton 40

On Sunday the fith of June 2011 44 riders turned out for the Casterton 40.
The riders faced cold wintery conditions with a strong north westerly wind, making it a tough ride back from Digby.
Also these conditions were favourable for the stronger riders along with the Challenging course.
That is the way the race tirned out.
Scratch had the whole field rounded upo before the cemetry hill on the return from digby.
Quite a few riders were able to hold on for the run home but the toop positions were predominatelly scratch riders.
Glen Schouller picked up first and fastest, Matt Lane from second scartch was able to outsprint Darcey Woolley for second place and keep hold of the series lead.
Final Placings
1st Glenn Schouller, 2nd Matt Lane 3rd Darcey Woolley, 4th Tim Koopman, 5th Lachlin Nolte 6th Jeff Mclean, 7th Andrew Brough, 8th type='text'>61st Frank Long

On Saturday May the 7th the 61st Frank Long was held at Hamilton on the "new Port Fairy road course"
Over 60 riders started the event with the handicapper Stephen Lennigan Giving Limit a 16 minute start on Scratch.
The Field was divided into 9 bunches by the handicapper, all of the bunches rode well, only 2 riders did not finish the event.
Limit rode well enough to stay away from second limit till the half way mark, at this stage Scratch had already picked up second scratch forming bunch of 14 riders.
The middle markers mostly stayed apart until the last 10 km of the event where the 7 minute bunch caught the 9 & a half minute bunch and the 11 & a half minute bunch.
this bunch of middlemarkers had the out markers well and truly in their sights and the back markers now with just under 30 riders in their bunch ahd the middle markers within reach as well.
I what turned out to an exciting finish the 4 remaining outmarkers were able to hold off the rest of the field by just on 20 seconds to take line honours.
Michael Krybolder taking first Place followed by a hard working Kate Winnen in Second place. 17 year old darcey Woolley once again showed his strength by taking fastest time and coming over the line in 5th place as well indicating how well the event was handicapped.
Coming up to the finish line two motor vehicles were blocked between the two large chasing bunches holding back the scratch bunch considerably.

Final placings
1st Michael Krybolder Camperdown
2nd Kate Winnen Port Fairy
3rd Anne Hocking Warrnmbool
4th Shannon Malseed Hamilton<br Dylan Lindsay Portland

The Next event the Casterton 40, one of the hardest envents in the South West series will perhaps favour the scratchmen so it will be interesting to see if they can consolidate their positions on the top of the Points table or iff Matt Lane from warrnambool can hold them off to keep his position on the top of the table.
Kate Winnem from Port Fairy has a good hold on the Womans leaders position and also is within reach out the top place outright as well, being an "outmarker" it will be interesting to see how things shape up after the casterton 40 and through out the rest ofthe South West Series.
The full points table is viewable by clicking the Comments Tab below
Hamilton to Port Fairy

On Saturday the 30th of april 52 riders turned out for the Hamilton to Port Fairy hosted by the Port Fairy Cycling Club.
The Handicapper divided the field into 5 large bunches with two smaller bunches as outmarkers.
Conditions were showery with a slight tail wind.

The 3rd scratch bunch rode well enough early to pick up 4th scratch at the half way mark, this large bunch containing over 20 riders inevitably picked up the outmarkers and also held off the scratch and second scratch bunches.

Last years winner Paul Nolte took the hotly contested sprint with a very large bunch hitting the finishline at the same time. After the first 22 kms of the 63 km race the scratch bunch had made up just45 seconds on their 4 minute chase to second scratch. This second scratch bunch was flying and had made up 3mins on 3rd scratch and had them within thier grasp. On the completion of lap 2, there was an intermediate sprint and Michael Krybolder from the 17 minute bunch claimed that trophy.
Not long after that the3 bunches behind him, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th scratch bunches had combined and were motoring along for the overall win. On their wat Matt Lane took out the King of the Mountain "Preem" on Cobdens Cemetry Hill.
The race now was in 2 main bunches, with the large bunch swallowing up th outmarkers & the 8 man scratch bunch now down to 7riders because of their upped pace as they made their charge.. With the 3 laps of the 17kms circuit behind themthe last 2 climbs over Coxes & Menzies hills was all that was between them & the finishline. But it was these 2 hills that split the large leading bunchup, as some riders applied the pressure and caused many others to tail off.On the decent into Camperdown 3 riders were clear of approximately 7 others with the rest scattered into smaler bunches and singles. At the line it was youmg Lauchlin Nolte from Portland that took the win from the very experienced older rider Mark Winnen from Port Fairy With local Camperdown club president Shane West close behind in 3rd place.
The young rider 17 year old Darcey Wooley out classed district strongman Brendon Schultz (now Basedin Bendigo)by taking fastest time by just half a wheel on the line.
Final placings.
1st Lachlin Nolte PTL
2nd Mark Winnen PTF
3rd Shane west CPD
4th Matt Lane WRN
5th Niel Duncan PTF
6th David serra WRN
7th Arno Vanderschans CPD
8th Alistair Tune CPD
9th Callum Middleton CLC
10th Wayne Hately CPD

Fastest time Darcey Wooley Port Fairy

For The Full Banks Thargo South West Points table click on Comments

2011 Banks Thargo South West Series begins at warrnambool

A very successful 2 day race weekend was held at Warnambool on the 5th & type='text'>The 2010 Gorae west Classic

The Gorae West Classic hosted by the Portland Cycling Club was held on Sunday the 8th of August 2010.
Conditions were overcast with strong & gusty Northerly winds.
The Field of 41 riders was divided into 6 bunches with 10 limit riders getting a 16 minute start on the 3 scratchmen.
The large limit bunch rode well with 4 riders doing the lion share of the work and the others pitching in with turns often enough to keep the pace quite high, after 3 laps this bunch had held off the rest of the field and no other riders were in sight on the bell lap.
The 5.30-minute bunch had also ridden well enough to have caught the rest of the field and stay away from the now combined scratch & second scratch.
At the sharp turn half way into the last lap the front markers realised they had enough of a gap to hold off the large bunch of middle markers trying to bridge the gap.

On the last rise into the wind 2 km from the finish Peter Hol from Portland made a race-winning move by riding away from the front markers, realising half of the leading bunch didn’t have the legs to chase him down and the remaining riders would have to get quite organised to chase him down.

Peter Hol just managed to stay away for a well deserved win from Mount Gambier’s Tim Angus who came in a very close second.
Final Placings 1 Peter Hol, 2nd Tim Angus 3rd Chris West ptf. 4th Kathy Nunn mtg. 5th Daryl Edwards ptf. 6th James O’Keefe ptf. 7th Col Angus mtg. 8th Jon Kidman mtg 9th Robert Logan wrn, 10th Ashley Herrewyn mtg.
Fastest time went to Timshel Knoll-Miller from Port Fairy

These placings haven’t effected the SWS leader board too much, with Stuart Robinson crossing the line in 11th place his intentions to get the leaders jersey back from Dean Mclaren are quite plain.

The Banks Thargo Leader board can be viewed by clicking on comments below
The Max McKenzie Memorial

The Mount Gambier Cycling & Triathlon Club hosted the Max McKenzie memorial on Saturday July 24th 2010.
The event a 61 km in distance was once again held under ideal conditions, with little or no wind at the start and a slight tail wind advantage on the finishing straight.
The handicapper divided the field of 43 into 6 bunches with one lone limit rider Robin Herrewyn getting a 43 minute start on scratch.
At the halfway mark it looked as though Herrewyn may just hold out for the win & the 8.30 bunch & the 11.30 bunch came together as well, at this point the event looked to be between the middle markers and the lone limit rider.
About 6 km from the finish the well organised middle markers picked up the 16 minute bunch making a bunch of around 21 riders, at this point Robin Herrewyn was only around 1km off the front, once she was picked up there was no easing off of pace at all ensuring no back markers would catch.
Erich Gstrien from Camperdown took a well deserved win, getting caught on the front of the pack about 600meters from the line, then waiting for an inevitable jump which came at around 500 m, Erich grabbed the passing wheel of a rider who carried him closer to the line for a much shorter sprint for 1st.
Fastest time went to Tim Koopman from Mount Gambier
Final placing’s,
1st Erich Gstrien CPD, 2nd Steve King MTG., 3rd Darren Earl MTG, 4th Robert Logan PTF, 5th Craig Dunn MTG, 6th Steve McArthur MTG, 7th Mark Hermon HAM, 8th Dean McLaren HAM, 9th Steve Kennedy MTG, 10th Paul Bast HAM.
By coming 8th Dean McLaren from Hamilton now has the leader’s jersey in the Banks Thargo South West Series; Cathy Angus is now the leading female.

The next event is the Gorae West Classic, on Sunday 8th of August
65 km Beeac progress Association Winter Handicap

Port fairy cyclist Craig Taylor comfortably won Saturday’s 65km Beeac Progress Association Winter handicap raced in trying conditions.
The Race was hosted by the Colac cycling Club as part of the Banks Thargo Wines South West Series of road races.
Taylor made the most of his14.30 minute handicap and rode a controlled race in cold and wet conditions.
The talented port Fairy rider was the dominant member of his 10-strong bunch and he used his years of experience to keep most of the group working to the end.
The Taylor bunch had hit the lead with about 21 kilometres to travel in the race and never looked like getting caught by the back markers.
In the sprint for the line Taylor was too strong for his co-markers and he crossed the line a bike length ahead of Horsham’s Monica Kelly and Camperdown rider Jason Smith.
The Scratchmen had a tough day and rode the whole race on their own. With a 4.30 gap to the second scratch group their task was made much harder when two co-markers did not start and David Tozer punctured early.
Port Fairy’s Luke Aggett won the scratchmen’s sprint to take fastest time honours

McPhee / Woodrup results

The June long weekend of racing turned out once again to a success for both Warrnambool & Port Fairy.
The weather was outstsnding with little or no wind to speak of and overcast skys, unlike last years long weekend where over 100mm of rain fell from saturday until midday monday.

On Saturday the 12th of june Warrnambool hosted the Stan Mcphee, a 68km race with a ride out to framlingham forest followed by 4 laps of the Falls Circuit.
47 Riders started the race with limit getting a 24 minute start on scratch. the conditions enabled a relatively fast race with most bunches holding together well. Only a few DNF's 2 of those being punctures.
The outmarkers had held most of their 10 minute advantage at the start of the fist lap of the falls circuit, they only lost a few more minutes in the next three laps. Most of the other bunches had trouble catching their next bunch, the only two bunches coming together being the fouth & fith scratch bunches.
David Herrewyn from Mt Gambier who rode strongly all day took line honours from Mark Scouller coburg 2nd & Rob Helmore in 3rd place.
Scratch not able to bridge the 2.00 minutes to second scratch still were able to get the fastest time with Dylan Hately from Camperdown taking that honour.

Results, 1st D Herrewyn mtg, 2nd Mark Scouller coburg, 3rd Robert Helmore CPD. , 4th Cameron Hart WRN. , 5th Wayne Hately CPD. , 6th Stuart Robinson HAM. , 7th Peter Ruart WRN. , 8th D Mclaren HAM. , 9th Larry McCarthy WRN. , 10th Laurie Paltridge PTF.

Fastest Time Dylan Hately from Camperdown.

The Greame Woodrup Memorial.

Sunday the 13th of june Port Fairy Cycling club hosted the Greame Woodrup memorial .

55 riders started with ideal conditions for a fast race, once again very slight wind.

After a few adjustments to the marks limit headed off with a 35 minute start on scratch and 10 minute start on second limit.

during the first lap of the course, most of the bunches stayed together and worked exceptionally well, 3 of the bunches seemed to be working more efficiently than the rest of the field.

Scratch as usual rode well taking the "Time Trial" option, very effectively in the slight breeze.the 12 minute bunch were holding their advantage and the 19 minute bunch had the front of the race in control. During the second lap srcatch were able to pick up the next 3 bunches holding a good pace and looking like riding for the win.

The fast moving back markers were abvle to pick up most of the field, with only a few kilometers to go.

The 19 minute bunch were determined enough to stay away from this large chasing bunch long enough to pick up the win.

The back markers crossed the line within 30 seconds of the winning bunch.

Results:

1 Ashley Herrewyn Mt Gambier

2 Nick Jehu Colac

3 Erich Gstrien camperdown

4 Spek Mt Gambier

5 Mick Lowther Pt fairy

6 Daryl edwards Pt fairy

7 John Jenkins Pt fairy

8 Kate Winnen Pt fairy

9 David Herrewyn Mt Gambier

10 Brian Hayes Hamilton

Fastest Time went to Simon Walsh from Port Fairy.

After the long weekend of racing the South west Series leader Board has had some notable changes with Stuart Robinson from Hamilton taking the Leaders jersey from Darren Earl from Mount Gambier.

Kathy Angus from Mount Gambier still holds a slight lead in the womans points table.

The current points table can be viewed by clicking on comments below

Long Weekend & Colac Combine

To Nominate for the next 3 events click on the following links.

1. Stan McPhee warrnambool Sat 12th June at 2.00pm vic mhyland@sjwarrnambool.catholic.edu.au phone (03) 55628423

2. RSL has sponsored this event since its inception.

64 starters lined up for the event, with limit getting a 24 minute start on scratch in what turned out to be a well handicapped event.

Scratch started 2 riders down with 2 late withdrawls, so from the Start Richie Belleville, Chris Eichler, Xavier Gstrien & Timshel Knoll-Miller had a hard task catching a very strong bunch of 6 on block at 1 minute 30seconds, with Mann, Koopman, Noonan,Anderson, Wood, Frankel & Richardson combining exceptionally well chasing down an equally strong 3rd scratch Schilling, Mclaughlin, Chant, Bartlett, woolley, Nolte & Mutch.
Once these 2 bunches combined the entire field was eventually reeled inn about 5km from the finish.
As the catch was made on a slight uphill section road space was a limiting factor, enabling the outmarkers to hold on to this fast moving bunch.
After the turn back onto the finishing straight around 40 riders were jostling for position in a fast moving bunch.
David Chant from Mt Gambier made the initial move coming up to the finishline starting an all out sprint for line honours.
16 year old Darcey Wooley from Pt Fairy outsmarted a far stronger rider in Jade Frankel from Warrnambool to take the win Jade riding from second scratch came in 2nd also taking fastest time.
Tim Koopman Mt G. 3rd, Rob Mann Mt G 4th , John Anderson Portland 5th, Rowdey Bartlett Mt G.6th, Richard Wood Mt G 7th, Lachlan Nolte Portland 8th, David Jones Mt G 9th and Tim Angus Mt gambier rounding out the placings in 10th place.
First female rider Cathy Nunn Mt Gambier.

The next event in the South West Series will be the type='text'>The Maquarie Camperdown Classic

On Saturday 10th April 2010 Camperdown held its first event in the 2010 Banks Thargo South West Series, the Maquarie Camperdown Classic.
64 riders turned out on an overcast day with moderate winds, at the start of the race "ideal conditions"
The handicapper divided the field into 7 bunches and 1 lone limit rider with a 30 minute start on scratch.

The 4 middle bunches were large bunches with numbers between 10 & 16 riders in each.
Scratch with only 4 riders had a hard task chasing 2&1/2 minutes to block with 7 riders who inturn had an equally hard task chasing a 2 minute gap to a bunch of 13 riders.

The course was out to the Cobden loop for 3 laps of an undulating and trying course.

Scratch lost David Tozer (Puncture) early on, making the task of catching block almost impossible.

Block caught 3rd scratch about half way through the race then a bunch with around 20 riders were chasing the largest bunch of 16 (4th scratch) once this catch was made it looked as though the block bunch would take who ever could "hold on" to the finishline.

On the third lap of the race heavy rain and strong crosswind greeted the riders as they rode the fast downhill section, then sharp turn into Cobden.

The 18 minute bunch starting with 10 riders had combined well, only losing 3 riders well into the third lap still had quite a gap to the fast moving "block" bunch.

The 18 minute bunch lost 2 more riders on the uphill section just before the final turn to the home straight into the fast "down hill tail wind" finishline at Camperdown.
At the same time the block bunch was within 500 metres looking to catch.

The outmarkers with Darren Earl,Chris Odonnel, Monica Kelly, Steve Kelly and John Cranwell stayed organised and held out to the line.
Earl taking first to chris odonnel second then Monica Kelly in a close 3rd.
Xavier Gstrien crossed the line 12 seconds after the winners to once again take fastest time riding from block.

Once again a well organised and well attended race at Camperdown, Presentations were held post Race at the Hamden Hotel.

Final placings 1 D Earl Mtg, 2 C Odonnel mtg, 3 M kelly hor, 4 S Kelly hor, 5th & Fastest Xavier Gstrien Camperdown, 6 L Nolte ptl, 7 Cirian Conaught Blrt, 8 J Cranwell mtg, 9 R Boydle cpd, 10 Jason Smith cpd.
<img width='1' height='1' POST.

The winners from each race both did not finish the other event relegating them to equal 5th with 25 points.

As the board shows it will take a few more events to break up the leaders, currently there is 29 in the top 10, that will change as we progress into the 15 events.

Unfortunatelly we have only had 2 female competitors at this stage, anne hocking wears the leaders jersey in the females section just by completeing her respective event.

To get the jersey consistency is the key, and as the "Travelling" Starts it will be interesting to see
how things pan out.

Cheers & See you all at the Camperdown Classic on type='text'>Glen Cook & Greg Gleeson

A successful start to the Banks thargo South west series was held at Warrnambool on the weekend.
With Fine weather mid 20's and slight winds conditions were ideal for good racing.

The Glen cook held on saturday the 13th of March saw a field of 57 starters.
The field was divided into 5 large bunches and a smaller bunch of 3 on limit.
The course Framlingham Forrest then 4 laps of the falls circuit.

in the early stages of the race it looked as though the fourth scratch bunch or the 3rd scratch bunch would get up.
Both Bunches were working well and holding good speeds, as were the back markers.
Third Scratch caught the 4th scratch bunch and held the rest of the field off for the win.
Matt Lane (WRN) took line honours closely followed by Richard Schilling (MTG)
Scratch crossed the line soon after with David tozer (PTF) taking fastest time.
final placings; 1 Matt Lane wrn, 2 Richard Schilling mtg, 3 Roland Evans ham, 4Larry McArthy wrn, 5 Wayne hately cpd, 6 Mark Hyland wrn, 7 Nick type='text'>Banks Thargo Wines South West Series Summary

The 2009 Banks Thargo South West Series has been an outstanding success this year.
With 195 different Riders from over 12 clubs participating through out the season.
Stuart Robinson has emerged the outright winner of the series with 285 points in total.
Stuart a fitting jersey holder in his return year has been the most consistent performer of the year.
His win came down to the line with Matty Gstrien from camperdown finishing just a few points behind after the final race.
Monica Kelly from Horsham also a worthy winner of the females jersey coming 12th overall in the series as well.

The Most successful club was Mount Gambier having 47 club members participating throughout the series, Hamilton came a close second only 32 points behind, while Hamilton had a smaller amount of competitors they had a very successful year with 6 of their riders finishing in the top 10, Port Fairy came 3rdthen camperdown came in 4th.

Next year we need to get a few more Mount riders and Camperdown riders to travel and we will have quite large fields at each event!

With over 195 participants there is a large pool of riders to draw from for any club promoting an event.

I can see no reason at all why there couldnt be over 100 riders at a few of next years events, perhaps the 1 casterton 40, 2 june long weekend or 3 anzac day where there is 1 hard race, 2 good weekend 3 good prizemoney along with the frank long.
Any way thats a thaught for individual clubs to keep in mind for next year each event in the South West series has been a good event, all for different reasons.
The last event the Camperdown Classic has the best finish of any event in the South West Series! the finish alone is reason enough to put it on next years must do list!

To all Clubs that have hosted races well done and to all participants in the events well done.

I know there are a few more mount Gambier Riders that are keen to travel to quite a few more events next year.

If any one can think of a way to get all 195 riders at the same place on the same day let us know, then we will have a race!

I will post the final points table for both riders and clubs soon.
Camperdown Classic

The final event in the South West series, the "Camperdown Classic" was held on the 3rd of october 2009.
The event a fitting final for the South West Series, a demanding course with a finish more suited to the Climbers and stronger riders.
The climbs ath the final few km's of the event up Sadlers road and Caravan park hills decided the placings for the event and ensured if there were to be a sprint it would be only a very select few contesting the win.

The field was divided into 5 bunches, and as with all of this years South West Series events the marks set by the handicapper were well set.
Although the outmarkers broke up the remaining bunches stayed together and worked well

The entire field had not come together with only 5km to go but scratch and second scratch had the leading bunch of 4 riders in their sight.
Dispite a gallant effort from these outmarkers including series leader Stuart Robinson second scratch had the strength to close that gap and Luke Agget from Port Fairy took line honours just catching in the final climb.

Placings, 1st Luke Agget Port Fairy, 2nd Travis Greening , 3rd Rohan Creed, 4th Roland Evans, 5th Stuart Robinson, 6th Laurie Peak, 7th Grant Oats, 8th David Tozer, 9th Simon Walsh, 10th Laurie Paltridge.

This weekend Stuart Robinson has to start and finish the race for his 10 points, Matty Gstrien could theoretically win outright, so the Camperdown race will be an interesting wind up to the series, good luck to both of them and hopefully there will be no mechanical failures or punctures to hold eithor of them up.

All of the riders in the top 10 have not only been consistent competitors they have performed well, Stuart Robinsons effort this year in his first year back has been outstanding.
Hope to see a good turn out at Camperdown, and good luck type='text'>belated south west update

Here is a brief summary of South West Series racing since the casterton 40.
There has been 4 races, Coleraine Iga 40km loop, Gorae West Classic, Colac race and the Glen Cooke at hamilton.

The Coleraine event was dominated by the back markers, a windy and hilly loop was suited to the stronger riders, Scratch had reeled the entire field in at the half way mark.
Schultz showed his strength bt taking first and fastest. Andy Graham and the Matty Gstrien hot on his wheel.

Gorae west was a day for the front markers, once again conditions looked suitable for the strong men, but the back markers had a smaller bunch, and with witmitz from scratch and Matty Gstrien from the block both out with punctures the event realy did favour the front riders with Mark Mclaren (Port Fairy) from limit taking 1st, Mellissa Mckinlay 2nd and Spek3rd.

All I have from the Colac race is the results so here they are 1st Cameron Shaw, 2nd and I presume fastest Richie Belleville 3rd Matty gstrien looks like scratch and the block stole that one!

The Glen Cooke had a small field start, just under 30 riders. the weather was horrendous with strong winds and a very cool day.
Conditions pointed to the back markers once again.
Lannigan had decided to give schultz a 2minute gap to bridge as a lone scratch rider, an indication of schultzes percieved strength.

second scratch had a group of 5 riders, Matty gstrien looked to be the strongest rider in that bunch.
As the race unfolded second scratch put up a great fight and managed not only to hold off Brendon schuktz, but Matty Gstrien from the block managed to get time replicating his brothers effort in the same event last year.
Mat only managwed to get time by 8 seconds, another indication of the strength of Brendon Schulz.
1 chasing a bunch of 5 and only just missing out on fastest time is an outstanding effort especially under the conditions!

Hamilton Fairing Well in SWS

After recieving 2 copies of the "Hamilton Spectator" and reading the articles regarding the Banks thargo South West Series and the Up and coming Hamilton 75, I have to agree with the comments published bt The Spectator!

Especially after witnessing Gary Pollack convincingly taking line honours in the Hamilton 75 under Less than favourable conditions for a road race!

You would all have to agree with the "Hamilton Spectator"! The three place getters broke away from the rest of their bunch at the top of Sanford hill. With around 13 riders chasing all the way home.
The top ten all came from the 18 minute and 12 1/2 minute bunches, it was pleasing to see 4 of these being from Hamilton. Darren Sheldon Showed guts and determination, to come 3rd, Dean Mclaren leadingthe chasing bunch back home came 5th, Stuart Robinson continueing his good form came 7th & Mark Hermon came in 9th.
Nick Cockrel, young rider fromHamilton Cycling Club won all three preme sprints during the race.
Fastest time honours were won once again by Brendon schultz of Hamilton, in a time just outside the course record he set the previous year.

Results, Peter Radcliff ptl 1st Steven Mutch MG 2nd, Darren Sheldon HAM 3rd, Thomas Tower CLC 4th, Dean Mclaren Hamilton 5th, David Jones MG 6th, Stuart Robinson HAM 7th, Steven Jones MG 8th, Mark Hermon HAM 9th, Steven Kelly Hrs 10th.
Fastest Time B Schultz HAM 1 hour 46mins.

This Report Courtesy of the Hamilton Cycling club, who would have guessed!

Well done to all ofthe top 3 riders a decisive move and well earnt palcings!

A couple of things I would like to add to the above report, Nick Cockrel who rode with me from the 25 minute mark rode exceptionally well, unfortunatelly he clipped a wheel and came off on the Sanford hill. I feel if it were not for this accident he would have also featured in the placings.
The move of the race Had to be when Steven mutch from Mt Gambier went on the Sanford Hill, of the bunch of 18 riders only 2 others could match the pace on the hill, young Nick Cockrel was a "Victim" of the "slowdown" at the back of this bunch!

I think the "Guts & Determination" comment posted above comes in at this point of the race.

Great to see a move like this not so great to be at the back of the bunch when it happens!

Juniors Race

Five Juniors riders contested the 15km junior race, which was contested out the Dunrobin Road, starting at the Small bore rifle range in Casterton.

Mount Gambier under 17 rider Sam Dwyer won convincingly riding from scratch, With Alex Bosch J15 Ham coming 2nd, from 2nd Scratch.

Results, 1st & Fastest Samm Dwyer MG 25mins 26 seconds, 2nd Alex Bosch, 3rd Dylan Lyndsay.

If you didnt get "Enough" at the Casterton 40, see you at the Casterton 50, you get to do the juniors course then the seniors as well, now thats value for your money!

Click on comments below for aggregate.

Very Wet long Weekend of Racing

The Queens Birthday Weekend of Cycling once again seems to have been a success.
Although a very wet weekend, each of the 3 events, The "Greg Gleeson", "Greame Woodrup" & "Stan Mcphee" were all very well attended.
The "Greame Woodrup" hosting the largest field for the weekend.

Saturdays event the "Greg Gleeson" was well won by Monica Kelly from Horsham, Monica rode off limit at 22mins. Limit although losing 2 riders early in the race were able to combine well, once 2nd limit made the catch there were enough workers to keep this bunch away.
second over the line was Mark Hermon (Hamilton) 3rd Stewart Robinson (Hamilton)
Fastset time once again Brendon Schultz (Hamilton)

The Greame Woodrup at Port Fairy was almost a carbon copy of Saturdays event.
2nd limit 25 mins stayed away for around 50km of the race, although back to 4 riders working a good pace was maintained. Once second limit 17mins caught the two groups were able to hold off any chashers for the line honours.
Stewart Robinson (Hamilton) showed his strength by driving the leading bunch right to the finish, even though only 3 riders were still working from about 4km out, Stewart one of them he still had power to hold off any of the would be "sprinters" in the bunch at the Finishline.
1st Stewart Robinnson 2nd Melissa Mckinlay (Mt Gambier) 3rd Gordon Cramm (Mt Gambier)
Fastest time went to Brendon Schultz (Hamilton), Brendon crossed the line 1min 42 seconds after the leading bunch.

The Stan Mcphee once again was looking like an outmarkers day, both Erick Gstrien and i had Picked Mark Mclaren as the winner in the unlikely event that the remaining 4 riders from limit would get up.
Limit stayed away for well over 3/4 of race distance, then once caught by the following two bunches that had combined and set an even pace, Mark Mclaren was the only limit rider to have the strength to hold on to that bunch.
Once back on to the last run back up to the finishline it was inevitable that today was going to be a middle markers day.
This group was thrown into confusion at the Falls circuit turn when some one indicated another lap was required, some riders turned some stopped, after discussion the bunch rolled up to the line, however as the Warrnambool Standard reported Mark Mclaren from limit got the Win, through his counting ability!
The backmarkers who had David Tozae and Brendon Schultz both trying to make a break for the fastest time honour, although Tozer and Matty Gstrien were able to get away and establish a sizable gap, these two also got involved in the confusion, once again Brendon Schultz took fastest time.

After much deliberation between officials and riders the order that riders crossed the line was the accepted finishing order.
1st Mark Mclaren, (Hamilton) 2nd Richard Schilling (Mount Gambier) 3rd Arno Vanderschans (camperdown)

In Summary the whole weekend was a good weekend of racing, although quite wet and cold, all events well attended.
Port Fairy recorded 100mm of rain over the weekend and Warrnambool 90mm of rain, the wettest day being the Monday.
Both Monica Kelly who is the current female leader in the SWS and Stewart Robinson the current male rider leader in the SWS had well earned wins on the weekend, congratulations to Mark Mclaren for "Out Foxing his rivals on Monday.
The Warrnambool Standard and the Moyne Gazette both had good write ups about the weekend of racing and there are a few Pictures available by looking at the Wannramboool Standards website.

The Next Event in The South West Series will be the Casterton 40, one of the toughest and always well contested events in the series.

The full leader board can be viewed by clicking on comments below this post.
Both Stewart Robinson (Male Riders) & Monica Kelly (Female riders) have a firm hold on their respective positions, consistnecy will help them stay ahead but there is enough races left in the series for them to lose That spot!
It also appears we have had over 160 roders compete in the series at this stage, not including the juniors, so we have seen nearly 200 competitors in this series.

June Long Weekend, 3days of racing!

Dont Forget June Long weekend, the next three South West Series races "3 in a row"

Greg Gleeson, Warnambool sat 6th june 2.00 pm start, 68km Wangoom,
Nominations, Mark Hyland, 03 55628423 or mhyland@sjwbool.balrt.catholic.edu.au

Graham Woodrup Memorial, 7th june Port fairy Showgrounds 11.00 am start
Nominate rnbelleville@westvic.com.au

Stan Mcphee monday 8th june Warrnambool (Wangoom) start 11.00 am 62km

Nominations once again to Mark Hyland.

Nominations Close Monday 2nd of June

There will be junior racing on each of the days as well.

So far we have had well over 100 participants in the South West Series, counting the Juniors probably over 150.

The ideal thing to happen would be to have all of these riders turn up on the same day for the same race! Fairy & Brendan Schutz Hamilton giving 15 minutes to the limit riders.
The Race turned out to be a front Markers day aslo the race for time in this years race went to the "Block" riders with 16 year old Xavier Gstrien taking that honour, according to the official time keeper, second scratch only put 8 seconds on to the scratch riders ride time.
Schultz & Tozer easily being the two stand out strong men in district racing this year, the Handicappers decision was a wize one on the day, while scratch didnt get "Time" the two of them chasing a much larger second scratch off 30 seconds, with 7 riders and only losing 8 seconds is indicative of the current form of thes two riders.

The 9-minute bunch Bilney Mt Gambier, Robinson Hamilton, Earl Mt Gambier, Mclaren Hamilton, O'Donnel Portland, Lewis Hamilton combined well and picked up the 12 minute bunch just after the turn at the 1/2 way mark and then picked up limit about 10 km from the line.

These riders were able to stay away to the line and with Bilney in the leading bunch, one of the most experienced finishers in the district, a win was inevitable, Bilney won several Australian roadracing Titles as a younger rider.
While Ray in now his 60's may not be riding from scratch, he is always an exciting rider to watch leading up to a finishline if he is still "in the mix"

Final placings for the Frank Long

1st Ray Bilney Mount Gambier
2nd Matthew Opdecoul Horsham
3rd Mark Mclaren Hamilton
4th Monica Kelly Horsham
5th Stuart Robinson Hamilton
6th Mark Jehu Colac
7th Niel O'donnel Portland

8th Howard Bartlett Mount Gambier

9th Roger lewis Hamilton

10th Steven Kelly Horsham

Fastest time Xavier Gstrien Camperdown, (30 seconds) 48 minutes 59 sconds

JUNIORS RACING

IN J11/13

10 KM HANDICAP EVENT,

Ashleigh Hocking Warrnambool first & Luck had it that the roads dried up and racing was held in near perfect and dry weather conditions, with no falls or crashes, but a few withdrawls by some riders that found the hills and the pace a bit too much to handle. The 58kms course consisted of 3 laps of the fast and hilly lake Bullen Merri to Cobden circuit, with the start & finish beeing at Camperdown.
Nine bunches faced the starter at 2.00pm, with the small limit bunch off a 30 minute handicap. Bunches quickly grouped up and by midway 3 main bunches were speeding along. An intermediate sprint was held at the completion of the first lap of two and was won by young Monica Kelly from Horsham, who just pipped her club team-mate Matthew Opdecoul. In the mean time the backmarkers were quickly closing in on the leaders, and had them down to a gap of about 5 mins with one lap to go. A big crowd on the outskirts of town formed & soon the lead car was seen with the orange light flashing and decending down the hill to the finish.
One rider was away with a small bunch chasing him down into Camperdown.
It was David Tozer (pt fairy) from the scratch bunch, who had broken away from the feild and took the solo win well clear of the chasers of Simon Walsh off 5 mins, & Paul Nolte off the 12 minute mark. Fourth was Mark Hyland and fith, local favoutite Paul Kent both also from the 12 minute bunch.

Presentations were held at the Hampden Hotel followed by a slide presentation from TOPBIKE TOURS operators Emma & Dave Ollie. Who conduct cycle tour packages to all major European road races. This added a European race touch to the night which included wonderfull meals and beverages well into the night.

Results
1st David tozer Port Fairy
2nd Simon Walsh Port Fairy
3rd Paul Nolte Portland
4th Mark Hyland Warrnambool
5th Paul Kent Camperdown

Fastest time David Tozer Port Fairy
Intermediate sprint Monica Kelly
First Veteran David Tozer
1st Camperdown Rider Paul Kent
1st Female rider Jo Coombe

report compiled by E. At about the 1/2 way make and about 2km onto the "overland road", thes two bunches combined, then i thaught yep I am right, things are looking like it will be an outmarkers day.
This also was about 2 minutes before my own tank ran dry; Stuart Robinson Hamilton was working like a trojan, which in turn created a few casualties amongst the out markers me being one of them.
Less than a minute after dropping off, what i think is a very fast moving front bunch, i looked behind only to see some very conspicuous looking red outfits closing in, quite a bit faster, with red having a bold presence in the chasing bunch i then realised, the handicapper had done his job quite well, I started with a chance, and blow me scratch had as well, and there they were, as usual, the red titans outfits as bold as ever, quickly bridging the gap.

Scratch had ridden quite well stopping any of the other back markers combining without them being involved, Shultz, Gstrien, Tozer,Bellville, & Eichler reeled in the field gaining strength along the way.

The out markers were picked up not too far out so any outmarker with any wheel holding ability had a chance in a placing, But realy only an outside chance!
Results Brendan Schultz wearing number 1st &Fastest Xavier Gstrien a very close 2nd& rounding out the top 3 Gary Pollock hamilton. 4th Heath Riley, 5th Chris Eichler 6th, 7th from 2nd limit & well deserved went to Stuart robinson 8th John Anderson, 9th Glen Schouler 10th Matt Gstrien

First Female Irene Whennen
Handicapping fanststic, riders from 2nd limit to scratch in top ten placings.
A couple of special mentions go to 1.
