Large Field

Here is a question for all,

How do we get all competitors at one race at one time?????

Any ideas let me know!!!

After 4 South West Series events we have had over 130 participants.

Finish at the soldiers memorial best one yet with over 40 riders in the bunch, nightmare for officials but a whole lot of fun!!

How about a start list of 120 riders at one event??

Soldiers Memorial Anzac day 2010

Mount Gambier hosted the 30th stageing of the Soldiers memorial on Anzac day.
The Mount Gambier & Districts RSL has sponsored this event since its inception.

64 starters lined up for the event, with limit getting a 24 minute start on scratch in what turned out to be a well handicapped event.

Scratch started 2 riders down with 2 late withdrawls, so from the Start Richie Belleville, Chris Eichler, Xavier Gstrien & Timshel Knoll-Miller had a hard task catching a very strong bunch of 6 on block at 1 minute 30seconds, with Mann, Koopman, Noonan,Anderson, Wood, Frankel & Richardson combining exceptionally well chasing down an equally strong 3rd scratch Schilling, Mclaughlin, Chant, Bartlett, woolley, Nolte & Mutch.
Once these 2 bunches combined the entire field was eventually reeled inn about 5km from the finish.
As the catch was made on a slight uphill section road space was a limiting factor, enabling the outmarkers to hold on to this fast moving bunch.
After the turn back onto the finishing straight around 40 riders were jostling for position in a fast moving bunch.
David Chant from Mt Gambier made the initial move coming up to the finishline starting an all out sprint for line honours.
16 year old Darcey Wooley from Pt Fairy outsmarted a far stronger rider in Jade Frankel from Warrnambool to take the win Jade riding from second scratch came in 2nd also taking fastest time.
Tim Koopman Mt G. 3rd, Rob Mann Mt G 4th , John Anderson Portland 5th, Rowdey Bartlett Mt G.6th, Richard Wood Mt G 7th, Lachlan Nolte Portland 8th, David Jones Mt G 9th and Tim Angus Mt gambier rounding out the placings in 10th place.
First female rider Cathy Nunn Mt Gambier.

The next event in the South West Series will be the Frank Long at Hamilton next Saturday the 1st of May followed by the Hamilton to Port Fairy on Sunday May 2nd

South West Series Points after race 3

After the first 3 events in the banks thargo South West Series, the leader board has widened out quite a bit.
Darren Earl from Mt Gambier has a 6 point lead from Richard Schilling also a Mt Gambier rider.

The Next Event In the South West Series will be the Soldiers Memorial on Anzac day at Mount Gambier.

As with the Frank long the race is around 40km and the prize pool exceeds $1000.

With 2 riders from Mt Gambier on the top of the leader board and the solders clashing with the Coleraine tour, it would be expected that the lead held by Earl will be widened.

The Maquarie Camperdown Classic

On Saturday 10th April 2010 Camperdown held its first event in the 2010 Banks Thargo South West Series, the Maquarie Camperdown Classic.
64 riders turned out on an overcast day with moderate winds, at the start of the race "ideal conditions"
The handicapper divided the field into 7 bunches and 1 lone limit rider with a 30 minute start on scratch.

The 4 middle bunches were large bunches with numbers between 10 & 16 riders in each.
Scratch with only 4 riders had a hard task chasing 2&1/2 minutes to block with 7 riders who inturn had an equally hard task chasing a 2 minute gap to a bunch of 13 riders.

The course was out to the Cobden loop for 3 laps of an undulating and trying course.

Scratch lost David Tozer (Puncture) early on, making the task of catching block almost impossible.

Block caught 3rd scratch about half way through the race then a bunch with around 20 riders were chasing the largest bunch of 16 (4th scratch) once this catch was made it looked as though the block bunch would take who ever could "hold on" to the finishline.

On the third lap of the race heavy rain and strong crosswind greeted the riders as they rode the fast downhill section, then sharp turn into Cobden.

The 18 minute bunch starting with 10 riders had combined well, only losing 3 riders well into the third lap still had quite a gap to the fast moving "block" bunch.

The 18 minute bunch lost 2 more riders on the uphill section just before the final turn to the home straight into the fast "down hill tail wind" finishline at Camperdown.
At the same time the block bunch was within 500 metres looking to catch.

The outmarkers with Darren Earl,Chris Odonnel, Monica Kelly, Steve Kelly and John Cranwell stayed organised and held out to the line.
Earl taking first to chris odonnel second then Monica Kelly in a close 3rd.
Xavier Gstrien crossed the line 12 seconds after the winners to once again take fastest time riding from block.

Once again a well organised and well attended race at Camperdown, Presentations were held post Race at the Hamden Hotel.

Final placings 1 D Earl Mtg, 2 C Odonnel mtg, 3 M kelly hor, 4 S Kelly hor, 5th & Fastest Xavier Gstrien Camperdown, 6 L Nolte ptl, 7 Cirian Conaught Blrt, 8 J Cranwell mtg, 9 R Boydle cpd, 10 Jason Smith cpd.
