Coleraine Combine

On Saturday August 21st 2010 the Hamilton Cycling Club hosted the Coleraine combine the 13th race in the banks Thargo South West Series.
34 riders nominated & 34 riders started the race in wintry conditions with a gusty Northerly wind and showers.
At the start of the race it looked like a day for the Scratchmen, with a challenging course and strong winds.
5 riders started on limit with a 14-minute start on scratch, this bunch as with all other bunches broke up on the climb on the outward leg of the race.
4 riders from the 10min 30 bunch, Stuart McKinley, Stephen Jones, Adam Ballentyne & Mike Lawson managed to stay together on this climb and set into a good rhythm, working toward a strong finish.
The second scratch bunch also fragmented leaving just Richard schilling & Darcy Woolley to work together to hold off scratch and chase the rest of the field.
These 2 back markers did an exceptional job, they managed to chase down the entire field except the 4 riders from the 10.30 bunch.
Stephen Jones from Mt Gambier came in for a well deserved 1st followed by Mike Lawson MTG. In 2nd, Stuart McKinley MTG. 3rd, Woolley & Schilling managed to cross the line soon after the winner & scratch came in soon after with David Tozer from port fairy taking fastest time honours.
1st Stephen Jones MTG, 2nd Mike Lawson MTG, 3rd Stuart McKinley MTG, 4th Adam Ballentyne HAM, 5th Laurie Peake MTG, 6th Darcy Woolley PTF, 7th Matt Caldersmith MTG, 8th Richard Schilling MTG, 9th David Jones MTG, 10th Monica Kelly HOR.

The 2010 Gorae west Classic

The Gorae West Classic hosted by the Portland Cycling Club was held on Sunday the 8th of August 2010.
Conditions were overcast with strong & gusty Northerly winds.
The Field of 41 riders was divided into 6 bunches with 10 limit riders getting a 16 minute start on the 3 scratchmen.
The large limit bunch rode well with 4 riders doing the lion share of the work and the others pitching in with turns often enough to keep the pace quite high, after 3 laps this bunch had held off the rest of the field and no other riders were in sight on the bell lap.
The 5.30-minute bunch had also ridden well enough to have caught the rest of the field and stay away from the now combined scratch & second scratch.
At the sharp turn half way into the last lap the front markers realised they had enough of a gap to hold off the large bunch of middle markers trying to bridge the gap.

On the last rise into the wind 2 km from the finish Peter Hol from Portland made a race-winning move by riding away from the front markers, realising half of the leading bunch didn’t have the legs to chase him down and the remaining riders would have to get quite organised to chase him down.

Peter Hol just managed to stay away for a well deserved win from Mount Gambier’s Tim Angus who came in a very close second.
Final Placings 1 Peter Hol, 2nd Tim Angus 3rd Chris West ptf. 4th Kathy Nunn mtg. 5th Daryl Edwards ptf. 6th James O’Keefe ptf. 7th Col Angus mtg. 8th Jon Kidman mtg 9th Robert Logan wrn, 10th Ashley Herrewyn mtg.
Fastest time went to Timshel Knoll-Miller from Port Fairy

These placings haven’t effected the SWS leader board too much, with Stuart Robinson crossing the line in 11th place his intentions to get the leaders jersey back from Dean Mclaren are quite plain.
